What is Varicose Veins Treatment?
Treatment Methods of Varicose Veins
Veins that appear on the skin and cause swelling may be a sign of varicose veins. Varicose veins is a disease of the veins and the function of these veins is to return the blood in the leg to the heart. The cause of varicose veins, which is a very common disease, is not known exactly. The patient's family history, sedentary work for a long time standing or sitting, pregnancy periods, some hormonal changes can facilitate the emergence of this disease.
One of the first things to do with varicose veins is to have an ultrasound (Doppler) of the leg veins. There are much more important thick veins on the inside of the leg. We want to know the condition of this vein. The ultrasound gives us detailed information. If there is enlargement and loss of function in the inner main veins (internal varicose veins, venous insufficiency), we may recommend compression stockings and some vascular protective drugs. Some patients may also require surgery.
In the surgery, the varicose veins that protrude from the skin are cleaned with small incisions and the superficial long veins under the skin are canceled. There are different methods for canceling superficial long veins. Closed methods are frequently used in recent years. Patients can be discharged the same day after the closed method and return to their daily lives after a short time. The closed method may not be suitable for every patient. Classical surgeries are still used for some patients. It is especially preferred in patients with very enlarged veins. These decisions are based on the information obtained by ultrasound. For smaller capillary varicose veins visible on the skin, injection and burning treatments can be used. In these treatments, drugs are injected to make the visible veins disappear. The drugs can be applied in liquid or foam form. These treatments are performed in an outpatient clinic and will not affect your daily life. It is usually done in sessions. It may not always be possible for all capillary varicose veins to disappear. After the procedure, varicose veins may recur or new varicose veins may appear in other areas after a long time.
What is recommended during the healing process?
Varicose vein surgery is an operation that can be performed in all seasons. Needle treatments and burning treatments are preferably performed more in winter months. Movement is very important in this process. Sports such as walking, light jogging, swimming and bicycles are recommended. It is also useful to lift the legs up and rest them during the day.
With the arrival of hot weather, veins may become more visible and complaints may increase. In such cases, a cold massage and a shower with cold water can be relaxing. Applications such as hot springs may increase complaints. If your doctor has recommended compression stockings, it is recommended to wear them in the morning before getting out of bed, spend the whole day in compression stockings and take them off at bedtime. Before wearing them again during the day, the legs should be lifted up and rested and then compression stockings should be worn. Especially in situations where you will be immobilized, such as long journeys, the legs should be moved frequently, small walks should be taken if possible and the legs should be lifted into the air. Patients who use compression stockings are strongly recommended to wear them regularly.
