Arachnoid cysts are developmental anomalies that can cause symptoms depending on their location and size. These symptoms may include headaches, seizures, increased intracranial pressure, hydrocephalus, developmental delays, behavioral changes, and weakness on one side of the body. These cysts are sacs filled with cerebrospinal fluid that accumulate between the layers of the meninges. They are most commonly found in the temporal region, posterior fossa, and suprasellar area.
If the patient has symptoms believed to be associated with the cyst, surgical placement of a shunt connecting the cyst to the abdominal cavity may be performed, or natural fluid cavities can be accessed through open surgery or endoscopic methods. In the Arachnoid Cyst Program, multidisciplinary approaches are utilized to evaluate monitoring and treatment options, assisting patients in finding the most suitable choice.
